Candy Cane Cookies

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 cup confectioners' sugar, sifted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 1/2 cups flour, sifted
  • 1/2 teaspoon red food coloring
  • 1/2 cup peppermint stick candy, crushed
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar

Recipe

  • 1 cream together butter and shortening, sifted sugar and vanilla until smooth.
  • 2 fold in egg and beat together.
  • 3 sift together flour and salt and add to mixture.
  • 4 divide dough in half and blend food colouring into one half.
  • 5 roll 1 teaspoons of each colour dough into 5" strips on a lightly floured board.
  • 6 lay a red and a strip side by side, press lightly together and roll and twist into rope form.
  • 7 place on an ungreased cookie sheet with one end curved to form the handle.
  • 8 bake in 375°f oven for 9 minutes or until lightly browned.
  • 9 while still hot sprinkle with mixture of peppermint candy and granulated sugar.
