Buttermilk Biscuits

Total Time: 27 mins Preparation Time: 15 mins Cook Time: 12 mins

Ingredients

  • vegetable cooking spray
  • 2 cups self-rising flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar (optional)
  • 1/2 cup vegetable shortening, cut into small pieces
  • 2/3 cup buttermilk
  • melted butter, for brushing (optional)

Recipe

  • 1 preheat oven to 425.
  • 2 lightly spray a large, heavy baking sheet.
  • 3 in a large mixing bowl, stir together the flour, baking powder, sugar(optional), and salt.
  • 4 cut in shortening until mixture resembles fine crumbs.
  • 5 make a well in center and pour in the buttermilk.
  • 6 combine the buttermilk and flour mixture until a sticky dough forms.
  • 7 turn dough on a floured surface and knead lightly 4-5 times, just blended.
  • 8 roll out the dough about 1/2-inch thick.
  • 9 using a floured 2-inch biscuit or cookie cutter, cut the dough into as many rounds as possible using a straight downward motion.
  • 10 do not twist the cutter or the sides of the biscuits will not rise evenly.
  • 11 place rounds on the baking sheet about 1 inch apart.
  • 12 if you want the biscuits with a very soft edge, place the close together on a baking sheet.
  • 13 knead the dough trimmings together lightly, reroll, and cur out as before. bake for 10-12 minutes or until golden brown.
  • 14 if you want brush the tops with a little melted butter and serve hot from the oven .
