Cream-cheese Brownies

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup butter or 1/4 cup margarine
  • 1 cup semisweet chocolate piece
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 tablespoons hot water
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1/2 cup coarsely chopped walnuts, if desired
  • 1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, room temperature
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Recipe

  • 1 prepare cream-cheese filling; set aside.
  • 2 preheat oven to 350°f grease an 8- or 9-inch-square baking pan.
  • 3 in a medium saucepan, combine butter or margarine and chocolate pieces.
  • 4 heat over low heat until melted and smooth, stirring constantly. remove from heat.
  • 5 stir in sugar, eggs, water and vanilla until combined. add flour, baking soda and salt, stirring well. stir in walnuts, if desired.
  • 6 spread half the chocolate batter evenly in greased baking pan. top with cream-cheese filling, spreading evenly.
  • 7 drop spoonfuls of remaining chocolate batter evenly on top of cheese filling, spreading as evenly as possible with a knife. swirl knife gently through batter to marble.
  • 8 bake 30 to 35 minutes. do not overbake. brownies should be moist in center. cool in pan.
  • 9 cut cooled brownies into squares. store in refrigerator.
  • 10 cream-cheese filling: in a small bowl, beat cream cheese, sugar, egg and vanilla until smooth.
