Caramel Bars

Total Time: 1 hr 5 mins Preparation Time: 15 mins Cook Time: 50 mins

Ingredients

  • Servings: 24
  • 6 tablespoons butter
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 egg yolks
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 cup sweetened condensed milk
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1 tablespoon corn syrup
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 3 egg whites
  • 3/4 cup sugar

Recipe

  • 1 to make the base: cream the butter and sugar in a mixing bowl.
  • 2 add the egg yolks and mix well.
  • 3 add the sifted flour and baking powder and mix well.
  • 4 press into a greased jelly roll pan.
  • 5 to make the caramel filling: combine all the ingredients in a saucepan and stir over low heat until dissolved.
  • 6 do not allow to boil.
  • 7 spread over the base.
  • 8 to make the meringue: whip the egg whites until stiff but not dry.
  • 9 gradually add the sugar, beating continuously.
  • 10 spoon over the caramel.
  • 11 bake in a 350 f.
  • 12 oven for 50 minutes.
  • 13 cut into bars while warm.
  • 14 note: if the meringue is becoming too brown, cover with a sheet of wax paper halfway through the cooking period.
  • 15 cooking for family& friends.
