Candy Cane Cookies

Ingredients
- 1/2 cup butter
- 1/2 cup shortening
- 1 cup confectioners' sugar, sifted
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 2 1/2 cups flour, sifted
- 1/2 teaspoon red food coloring
- 1/2 cup peppermint stick candy, crushed
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
Recipe
- 1 cream together butter and shortening, sifted sugar and vanilla until smooth.
- 2 fold in egg and beat together.
- 3 sift together flour and salt and add to mixture.
- 4 divide dough in half and blend food colouring into one half.
- 5 roll 1 teaspoons of each colour dough into 5" strips on a lightly floured board.
- 6 lay a red and a strip side by side, press lightly together and roll and twist into rope form.
- 7 place on an ungreased cookie sheet with one end curved to form the handle.
- 8 bake in 375°f oven for 9 minutes or until lightly browned.
- 9 while still hot sprinkle with mixture of peppermint candy and granulated sugar.
